Why Gentle Stories Matter to Children

In a world filled with noise, screens and fast moving impressions, a gentle story can offer both children and adults a moment to slow down.

Reading together does not need to take a long time or feel complicated. Sometimes, it is enough to sit close, open a book and travel somewhere else for a little while. For a child, it becomes a comforting moment shared with someone who is present, listening and reading beside them.

Stories make room for feelings

Children experience many emotions during an ordinary day. Joy, curiosity, worry, disappointment and excitement can quickly follow one another.

Stories allow children to meet these feelings from a little distance. It can be easier to talk about a character who feels afraid, misses something or needs help than to immediately find the words for their own experiences.

A book can open the conversation without expecting the child to have all the words.

Small moments can hold great adventures

A children’s story does not need to be loud to spark the imagination. A tree, a path, a lost balloon or the soft glow of a lighthouse can be enough to create an entire world.

When a story is allowed to unfold gently, children have time to look, wonder and notice the details. What might be hiding behind the tree? Where does the path lead? How does it feel to help a friend?

Imagination often begins with the smallest questions.

Reading together is not about doing it the right way or reaching a certain number of pages. Some days, a child may want to hear the whole story. On other days, you might stay on one illustration or begin talking about something completely different.

Lillen & Doris was created from a wish to give young children warm stories filled with friendship, kindness and imagination.

On Balloon Island, children follow seven friends through adventures both big and small. Each story explores something children can recognise, such as friendship, courage, hope, curiosity or believing in yourself.

The books are written for children aged two to five and are available in English, Swedish and Spanish.
